There is a grief that ages the face and
          hardens the heart
              Yet softens the spirit...

A grief that casts shadows on the eyes
              Yet broadens the mind...
A grief that keeps the pain and has no words
              But increases the understanding...

There is a grief that breaks the heart and
          wounds the soul,
That lasts and lasts and can shatter in a
          minute,
But will inspire for a lifetime.

To Those I Love

                               --by Isla Paschal Richardson
If I should ever leave you whom I love
To go along the Silent Way, grieve not,
Nor speak of me with tears, but laugh and talk
Of me as if I were beside you, for
Who knows, but that I shall be oftentimes?
I'd come, I'd come, could I but find a way!
But would not tears and grief be barriers?
And when you hear a song I used to sing.
Or see a bird I loved - let not the thought
Of me be sad, for I am loving you
Just as I always have .. You were so good
To me ... So many things I wanted still
To do ... So many, many things to say to you ...
Remember that I did not fear ... It was
Just leaving you I could not bear to face ...
                          We cannot see Beyond ... But this I know;
I loved you so -- 'twas heaven here with you!

His Journey's Just Begun

                                    ----by E. BRENNEMAN
Don't think of him as gone away-
  his journey's just begun,
  life holds so many facets--
  this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
  that we could know today
  how nothing but our sadness
  can really pass away.
And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost--
and he was loved so much.

  Love Eternal

Time is too slow for those who wait,
Too swift for those who fear,
Too long for those who grieve,
Too short for those who rejoice,
But to those who love, time is eternity.
-Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933)

The Tide recedes but leaves behind
Bright seashells on the sand,
The sun goes down but gentle
Warmth still lingers on the land.
The music stops and yet it echoes on
In sweet refrains.....
For every joy that passes,
Something beautiful remains.

YOU MUST LET IT GO
You cannot erase the past;
you must let it go.
You cannot change yesterday;
you must accept the lessons learned.
You cannot stop time
or stand still in a world
racing around in circles;
you must dance with the wind
and sing with the songs
that are playing.
Let whatever mistakes you have made
remain in the shadows
of times gone by,
and let love be the answer
to the mysteries in life.

(Amalthea Celebras

There's nothing like the feeling
Of someone dear to you
Giving warm and tender hugs
No substitute will do
A hug of greeting quick and firm
Is also just as good
The little squeeze of pleasure feeling
Everybody should
A hug can be consoling
To someone down and sad
A simple hug with no words spoke
Will make the person glad
A child will hug his parents
A person hugs his pet
Two marrieds hug each other
And friends when they have met
A hug is usually held between
Two people, that is true
But hugs are things that should be shared
Even by more than two
The feeling of two loving arms
Wrapped cozily around
There is not any better sense
That ever could be found

When all the ceremonies
of death are done
THe eulogies said
The flowers gone
When there are
no more offerings
of food
When the mail
returns to mostly junk
Then the true mourning
will begin---
the quiet grief

WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR
BY PAULA PORTER
People say I'm handling is well,
coping,
       adjusting...
But they don't know I go to sleep every night
               hugging a pillow
                 pretending it's you
and praying not to wake up
                      another morning alone.
People want to know how I'm doing
                   making a new life....
              going on....
I give a sad smile and say,
             "It's rough."
             "Thanks for asking."
 "I'm managing."
         Words they want to hear.
People comment how strong and brave I've been
              through it all...
              your cancer,
              your fight for life,
              your death.
But they can't understand that
             my strength
             and bravery
             and hopes
             were buried
                           with you.....

When you find yourself doubting
your capacity to recover,
be patient and realize that the
grief process, though lengthy,
ultimately does bring healing.
Let yourself feel good again,
laugh with friends, have fun.
Living your life to the full is not
betrayal of a memory but
fulfillment of a promise to
someone who would want only
the best for you.
